Can You Have Sex on Your Period?

For years many women have avoided sex while on their period, mainly due to old fashioned taboos -but there’s nothing ‘dirty’ or dangerous about menstrual blood or having sex on your period.

Engaging in sexual intercourse while you are menstruating does have some advantages and disadvantages. As long as having sex on your period is not causing you or your partner any discomfort or pain, and you have both given consent there is no reason to stop you from at least giving it a go.

Disadvantages:

There is still a small chance that you could fall pregnant while on your period. Some women may ovulate earlier than others, while some may experience an irregular cycle. In addition, sperm can survive for up to 5-7 days in a woman’s body, meaning that fertilisation may still occur if you don’t know exactly where you are on your cycle or are experiencing an irregularity in your cycle.

If you experience spotting (slight bleeding outside of your usual period which doesn’t usually require protection from a tampon or pad) be aware that this may be a sign that you are ovulating, so it’s best to use a condom if you do have sex. If spotting occurs more regularly than usual this may be a sign of an underlying condition, speak to your local GP or doctor if you do have any concerns.

Having sex on your period could potentially be sore as your cervix sits lower during menstruation, so take it slow and find out what positions are comfortable for you.

Advantages:

One main benefit of period sex is that it can relieve menstrual cramps while also boosting your mood. Period cramps naturally occur as the uterus contracts to shed its lining which many women not only find uncomfortable but also feel it brings their mood down.

Women who do have sex on their period find it to be beneficial as orgasms allow the uterus to contract and then release the lining, it can be said that sex on your period speeds up the process due to orgasms encouraging your uterus to shed its lining quicker than it naturally would without them.

Having an orgasm also releases natural endorphins, which can give the feeling of pleasure while decreasing the feeling of pain that you may be experiencing during your period through cramps.

Menstrual blood also acts as a natural lubricant, which may mean the sex feels even better.

How to have safe sex on your period

  1. First things first, you must have consent from your partner. Be honest and tell your partner that you’re on your period. If you know your flow well enough you can also time having sex with your cycle, for example if you know you’re usually heavy on days 3-5 then why not try it on days 1-2 to see how your partner feels.

  2. If you have been using a tampon or period cup, ensure this has been removed. A forgotten tampon can easily be pushed up further into the vagina and can potentially cause a bacterial infection if it goes unnoticed.

  3. Use protection even if you are on the contraceptive pill, track your period through an app or have the coil/implant, its important to use a condom to not only protect yourself from an unplanned pregnancy.

  4. Protect your sheets. By laying a towel on the bed this will ensure any blood is kept away from your sheets. Remember to have Organ(y)c Intimate Wet Wipes on hand for cleaning up after intercourse.

  5. Opt for the missionary position and put down some towels as lying on your back helps to lessen the blood flow.

  6. Enjoy!
