12 Facts About Your Period

1.       The sound of your voice changes during your period. Vocalization researchers found that female reproductive hormones impact your vocal cords, therefore altering your voice.

2.       You may spend more money during your period. Research shows women spent more money and shopped more impulsively while menstruating than during other phases of their cycle.

3.       Your smell changes while you’re on your period. Men’s testosterone levels rise when they smell clothing worn by women who are ovulating, but not menstruating. The scent change is diminished by hormonal birth control.

4.       Your period doesn’t sync up with your friends and housemates. Researchers monitored women living together for more than a year and found their periods didn’t sync up after all!

5.       Water pressure can temporarily stop your flow. The pressure from the water you’re in counteracts the gravity of blood exiting your vagina. It’s not stopping you bleed, it’s the pressure stopping the blood from flowing out.

6.       You bleed a lot less than you think. On average, a woman only loses about 60ml of blood each period. That’s about 16 teaspoons or 2 shot glasses.

7.       The average starting age for periods has changed over the years. Back in the 1800s, girls wouldn’t get their periods until around 17. Nowadays, the average age to start menstruating is 12, with some girls starting as young as 8.

8.       Your periods get worse when it is cold. Cold weather can make your period heavier, longer, and more painful than normal.

9.       You’re born with all your eggs. You start life with more than a couple million eggs. As your menstrual cycle kick-starts, one of these eggs matures each month and is released. All the extra eggs gradually die off as your biological clock ticks.

10.   A missed period doesn’t always mean you’re pregnant. Hormone imbalances, stress or body weight can have a significant impact on your menstrual cycle. Keep a close eye on your symptoms to try figure out what’s going on. Remember to do a pregnancy test just in case!

11.   Your brain can be affected by your period. Research suggests that cognitive functions and attention span may be affected because of period pain. This explains brain fog and lack of concentration then!
